About
Madeline ‘Mo’ Oslejsek (they/she) is an award-nominated queer multidisciplinary theatre artist whose work is based in phenomenology and 'queer' as a practice.
Creating intricate, immersive soundscapes that shine a light on the varied realities of the human experience, she aims to push the boundaries of what spectators and makers believe theatrical art is capable of.
At the core of her work is their passion for creating risk-taking theatre that simultaneously highlights the differences and similarities between individuals to create connections through shared experiences and understandings.
They specialise in theatre theory and research, soundscape design, and devised theatre practices with an affinity for site-responsive theatre and theatre-in-the-dark.
Credentials include a BA in Theatre from Ohio Wesleyan University and MA in Advanced Theatre Practice from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, University of London.
WHAT IS
‘QUEER’ AS A PRACTICE?
By Madeline ‘Mo’ Oslejsek
“Queer is not an ‘instead of’, it’s an ‘inclusive of’.”
As a queer artist, I aim to create work that challenges normative modes of existence and offers an alternative, 'queer' way of understanding, engaging with, and being in the world. When I say ‘queer’ though, I'm not necessarily referring to a way that is associated to the LGBTQIA+ community, although the starting point for my work is often decidedly queer in that sense. I'm talking about a way that subverts the normative and resists the boxes people try to put it in; what Adele Morrison articulated as, "not an 'instead of'. . .an inclusive of." 'Queer' as a practice acknowledges that theatre is polysemic and must be willing to take risks, embrace an experience that is not yet stable, and, above all, be accessible to all.
“Sound queers the self/world boundary, all day, everyday. In so doing, it blurs the edges of any self that the subject‐machine cares to hail; even in the midst of the 'hey you, here’s your house music' there are other noises afoot, other sounds playing, other ways to become something more or less than one more obedient minority subject.”
